Play Out Logo 2.0

August 28, 2026

I discovered Artists For Humanity earlier this year while watching an episode of Subway Takes. A passionate teenager spoke with host Kareem about their love of art (and the cello!), and how adults should support young people trying to pursue creative careers. My ears perked up. I often collaborate with visual artists, and supporting talented young people is something I love to do.

Months later I contacted the organization, which led to some great conversations, a tour of their studio space in Williamsburg, and brainstorming on how we might work together.

We landed on the creation of a new logo for Play Out, to replace my first Canva attempt. This turned into a totally wonderful experience: the students were lovely, and asked all kinds of smart questions about what Play Out represented, and what I wanted the logo to express about it visually.

In return, I designed a workshop for twenty teens in their studio space, where they practiced creating abstract art based on my live performance of Caroline Shaw’s Boris Kerner. The students were excited for the challenge, and created brilliant works inspired by their experience of the music in real time.

I look forward to the possibility of collaborations in the future, and wish all the students and their mentors a successful start to the school year!
